The order was re-instated in the 1940s after WWII by Harold Chambers, an American soldier from a wealthy family. Harold’s upbringing was rooted in strict religion, but the war changed him. He saw and was even forced to participate in the worst that humanity had to offer and saw it as blasphemy, despite being versed in the Old Testament. After Normandy, Harold had been stationed in France and became part of the effort to free France from the Nazi rule. During a daily patrol, his squadron came under heavy fire, forcing them to scatter. Harold took cover in a small museum where a German soldier had been lying in wait. The two engaged in physical combat where Harold was overcome by the large soldier. As he was about to be killed, Harold begged God to save him which is when an old halberd fell and impaled the German soldier in the head, a halberd that had been on display for a small exhibit about the Templar order back in the 1300’s. The bewildered Harold stole one of the books and display and went back to join his squadron who had repelled the Germans.
Being bi-lingual, Harold had no difficulty reading the book which was the manifesto for the order. Harold saw this as a sign from God to restart the order and create a holy land where God’s will was complete and absolute. Towards the end of the war, Harold and his platoon raided an underground Nazi compound, where he came across a young scientist named Klaus Wagner. In exchange for his freedom, Klaus promised to help assist Harold in his mission of faith by continuing with the Nazi’s experiments but in the name of God.
After the war, Harold returned to his home where he began to build a secret following by telling horror stories of the Nazi regime and how God had shown him the way to paradise, explaining that God had brought him to Germany to show him to tools he would need, science. He claimed that God had dictated that the city would become the next Garden of Eden and that it would eventually be separated from the rest of the world. As he began to gain more followers to help fund the experiments run by Klaus and a few other scientists, the Templar order began to grow not just monetarily but by people who actually believed in the cause. The Templars began to divert more funds towards attempting to cure diseases and assist in other global issues such as world hunger, pollution, and clean energy. However, their progress was halted in 1975 with Harold’s unexpected death at the age of 59. His son, Thomas Chambers took over the order shortly after that as Grandmaster.
During Thomas’ reign, the Templar order grew more inclusive. Funds secretly began going towards secret restaurants and clubs where members could relax and indulge in depravity. His views were much more radical than his fathers, believing that if the city was to become the next Eden, it would be done with blood, sweat, hard work and force. It is during Thomas’ regime as Grandmaster that the Templar serum is concocted, enhancing a person’s strength, speed, durability, and heightening their senses.
Thomas would begin to oversee more and more of Klaus’ work, eventually steering their direction more towards advanced weaponry and human mutations while putting the work his father ordered on ice. Klaus was not particularly fond of these experiments, but he valued his life and followed through accordingly. Thomas’ first task for Klaus was to create a serum that would duplicate the effects of the fabled Fountain of Youth. In 1986, to his own surprise, Klaus would test a prototype on himself and felt his body de-age internally. After several scans, Klaus noticed that all his vital organs functioned as if he was in his 20’s. By this point in time, Thomas had become more erratic in his leadership. Members who had spoken out with concerns were labeled a heretic and burnt alive, he would order secret poisonings in projects while not caring who else was killed as collateral. But the final straw came when he ordered Templars to cut down anyone the order deemed a ‘deplorable’, even in broad daylight.
With the police’s suspicions being raised due to the bodies that the order was leaving around, Thomas’ son, Maximillian Chambers, began to fear that the openness of the Templar’s advanced tech would lure in government interference. Maximillian went to Klaus (who at this point was the most senior member of the order) with his fears and the two agreed that something had to be done. So, in 1992, under Maximillian’s orders, Klaus would taint a serum with an untraceable poison and deliver it to Thomas, claiming it was the completed serum for the Fountain of Youth. The tainted serum would kill Thomas almost instantly, allowing Maximillian to ascend to the rank of Grandmaster at 30 years old, the same age his grandfather was when he founded the Templars.
Maximillian’s first order of business was retrieving the actual serum for the fountain, which Klaus claimed to have destroyed. When he refused to re-create it, Maximillian ordered Klaus’ death. The soldiers leave Klaus for dead after his lab explodes. Of course, Klaus would go on to live in hiding while the Templars believed he was dead.
Maximilian would continue to train his body and mind in the efforts to become a ‘superior’ mortal all while continuing his father’s ordered research in secret from the public eye. The slayings and burnings stopped, and Maximillian would lead effortlessly until 2023 when a woman would dawn the symbol of God’s most devious creation in an effort to take down his beloved family legacy.
A Templar Knight is the order's most common but effective weapon. Usually brainwashed orphans or zealots, a Templar Knight is taught to understand at least 5 different languages and to be proficient in just as many types of martial arts.
